Railway Survey
- Date: 2003 – 2015
- Client: Network Rail
- Project Type: Railway telecoms project
About this Project
BDS provided a comprehensive range of route survey solutions for rail infrastructure across the UK. Our team of experienced surveyors was appointed by Network Rail to undertake route surveys in support of the Fixed Telecoms Network (FTN) Project between 2003 and 2015.
During this time, we successfully captured all the required telecoms information, route condition, and capacity on 12,000 Km of route throughout the UK rail infrastructure. Our survey teams accurately mapped the position of all relevant line side features, including GPS co- ordinates for line side telephones, cabinets, transmission and radio sites, bridges, tunnels, and access points, together with thousands of photographs. Our office-based team then produced FTN compliant designs for the NWR project team based on the site data collected by our surveyors.
In addition, we also carried out more than 1,000 GSM-R Fibre tail surveys, which were required to connect the GSM-R mast sites to the FTN fibre backbone to enable the implementation of the new GSM-R train radio system.
Our team completed these surveys over a 2-year period, involving a detailed site survey of each mast site and a thorough survey of typically 1 to 2 Km of route works to ensure that adequate trough route capacity was available or alternatively, a survey solution for a new route if required.
